Who is this course for
The focus of our Education courses are to embed safe intervention strategies for ALL individuals who are supporting children, in Nursery, Primary or Secondary School settings, equipping teams and staff with the tools they need to transform challenging behaviours into positive outcomes in the classroom and beyond.
All HCEST trainings emphasis is based on theories of aggression, and de-escalation techniques, only when these have been exhausted, would we cover low level interventions, the situations covered will fall within the legislation Section 93 of the Education and Inspections Act (2006).
Learning Outcomes
- A range of non-physical interventions strategies including trigger identification, calming communication styles, distraction techniques and de-escalation of aggression.
- A range of low-level physical Interventions including breakaway techniques and safe handling / escorting holds.
Key course information
The situations covered within this course have been compiled due to common occurrences within schools and all fall within Section 93 (Use of Reasonable Force) such as:
- Removing disruptive children from a classroom where they have refused to follow an instruction to do so.
- Prevent a pupil behaving in a way that disrupts a school event or a school trip or visit.
- Preventing a pupil from attacking a member of staff or another pupil, or to stop a fight in the playground.
- Restrain a pupil at risk of harming themselves through physical outbursts.

1. Introduction to Physical Interventions (1 Day)
Overview
This low level Course is aimed at individuals who are supporting children, in Nursery, Primary or Secondary School settings, equipping teams and staff with the tools they need to transform challenging behaviours into positive outcomes in the classroom and beyond.
Learning outcomes
- Conflict Resolution Training Standards as set out in the UK Core Skills and Training Framework. In depth knowledge on how to de-escalate conflict situations, utilising both verbal and nonverbal strategies
- Legislation in relation to physical Interventions: Section 93 of the Education and Inspections Act (2006) The use of Reasonable Force in Education settings.
- Breakaway Techniques – Training will include low level responses to grabs and potential physical assault.
- Positive Handling strategies – A range of safe Low level holds for staff when alone or in pairs (to manage situations described in Section 93).
- Post incident Analysis
- Staff/Patient support following incidents.
- Reporting recording of incidents

- All training resources including powerpoints, workbooks, teaching guides.
- 24/7 contact with HCEST training department should they need any support.
- Assistance with policy development in relation to physical Interventions.
- HCEST professional support of a fully insured company (£5,000,000 liability insurance) and advisory support as registered Expert Witness in light of any legal proceedings related to physical interventions.
- Techniques are regularly reviewed and risk assessed by both our subject matter Health and Safety Expert and registered Occupational Therapist.
Additional Information
This course is also available in the Train the Trainer format. Organisations find this training pathway more cost effective, enabling them to cascade training down to their own staff, partnered with the full support of HCEST Trainers.
The course is extended in duration to allow comprehensive discussion and uptake of subject knowledge, alongside thorough competency in the teaching and delivery of HCEST practical techniques.

2. EDUCATION TRAIN THE TRAINERS (5 DAY)
Train the Trainers (TTT) Level 2
Overview
As with the introductory 1-day course, this Advanced TTT course is aimed at all Adults supporting
children in Education settings (Nursery through to Secondary), equipping teams and individuals with
the tools they need to transform challenging behaviours into positive outcomes in the classroom and
beyond.
Learning Outcomes
- Conflict Resolution Training Standards as set out in the UK Core Skills and Training Framework. In depth knowledge on how to de-escalate conflict situations, utilising both verbal and nonverbal strategies.
- Creating positive environments where children can flourish (OFSTED)
- Attachment and Trauma Awareness
- Legislation in relation to physical Interventions: Section 93 of the Education and Inspections Act (2006) The use of Reasonable Force in Education settings.
- Breakaway Techniques – Training will include low level responses to grabs and potential physical assault.
- A full range of last resort, risk assessed, physical Interventions, including low level escorting techniques, and de-escalation of holds.
- Positive Handling strategies. A range of safe Low level holds for staff when alone or in pairs (to manage situations described in Section 93 i.e Skills to prevent a pupil from attacking a member of staff or another pupil, or to stop a fight) in the playground.
- Post incident Analysis
- Staff/Patient support following incidents.
- Reporting recording of incidents
In addition, the Education organisation will also be provided with:
- Policy in relation to physical Interventions
- Robust reporting and recording systems
- A comprehensive environmental risk assessment of your organisation.
