CPD accredited Personal Safety and Lone working

Personal Safety and Loneworking Level 1 Train the Trainer (2 day course)

This CPD accredited course is targeted for front line Health, Social and Care staff working within services which require elements of lone working. The training will be based at our Centre for Excellence in Woolton High School, or at a separate location if required.

HCEST staff delivering this training consist of registered HCPC and frontline practitioners who have amassed decades of experience working with service users and outpatients in the community.

Training consists of a blend of theoretical knowledge* and practical skills, providing the tools maximise staff safety in the workplace. This course requires active involvement in practical elements and encourages full participation in classroom discussion, reflection and sharing of good practice.

Key Learning subjects covered include:

Conflict Resolution (4hrs) – as set out in the UK Core Skills and Training Framework

  • Methods of communicating and the role of verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Causes of communication breakdown including cultural differences.
  • Common causes of conflict and behaviours you may encounter in conflict situations.
  • The Assault Cycle – phases of an assault and the pattern of behaviour (Kaplan and Wheeler, 1983)
  • Identifying triggers, recognising early warning signs.
  • Describe the use of safe distance when dealing with conflict.
  • De-escalation strategies to prevent a physical situation.
  • Relevant legislation and the use of reasonable force.
  • Reporting and recording procedures.
  • Staff wellbeing post incident.

Last Resort Breakaway techniques (8hrs)

  • A comprehensive range of simple, easy to apply techniques to evade common assault scenarios as reported by Crime Survey for England and Wales (2020) and Health Safety Executive (2020).

Lone Worker Training (4hrs)

  • Legislation for employers and employees.
  • Impact of violence and aggression.
  • What is a Loneworker?
  • Risk Assessments
  • Who, what and where are workplace hazards?
  • Covid-19 guidance
  • Staff safety protocols
  • Control measures for common hazards
  • Importance of reporting, recording and reviewing

Services involved in the Personal safety and Lone worker Awareness training will receive HCEST professional support of a fully insured company (£5,000,000 liability insurance) and advisory support as registered Expert Witness in light of any legal proceedings related to physical interventions.

* Online interactive learning via Microsoft Teams can be considered for organisational group training.

Personal Safety and Loneworking Level 1 Train the Trainer (5 day course)

This course is also available in the Train the Trainer format. Organisations find this training pathway more cost effective, enabling them to cascade training down to their own staff, partnered with the full support of HCEST Trainers. The course is extended in duration to allow comprehensive discussion and uptake of subject knowledge, alongside thorough competency in the teaching and delivery of HCEST practical techniques.

  • An in-house expert as a point of contact.
  • Insuring staff have up to date knowledge / refresher training when required.
  • All training resources including powerpoints, workbooks, teaching guides.
