Overview

All HCEST training courses have a strong emphasis on theories of aggression and appropriate use of de-escalation techniques. It is only when these de-escalation techniques have been exhausted, that we would move to the use of low-level physical interventions.

This course is aimed at individuals who are supporting children, in nursery, primary, secondary or special school settings.

The aim of this course is to teach staff about how to support a child that has become distressed / dysregulated. Trainees will be taught a wide range of approaches, using verbal strategies initially, distraction techniques, and de-escalation of aggression skills.

For last resort situations when all other de-escalation techniques have been exhausted, trainees will be shown a range of low-level physical Interventions. All scenarios / situations covered will fall within the legislative remit of Section 93 of the Education and inspections Act (2006).

Reasonable force can be used in the following circumstances (however this list is not exhaustive)./p>

  • Physically escorting disruptive children from a classroom where they have refused to follow an instruction to do so.
  • Preventing a pupil behaving in a way that disrupts any school event (including a lesson / assembly) or a school trip or visit.
  • Preventing a pupil from attacking another pupil or a member of staff, or to stop a fight in the playground
  • Tot restrain a pupil that is potentially at risk of harming themselves.

The course will also cover post incident analysis following all occasions where physical intervention of a child has been required.
